Late October falls in the reef’s dry season, with warm water and the summer rain still weeks away. After two days at sea Celebrity Edge anchors off Airlie Beach for a day among the Whitsundays, Whitehaven Beach and its white silica sand among them. Then two days and a night off Cairns: a full day on the outer reef, dinner ashore, and time the next day for the Kuranda Scenic Railway up into the rainforest before the ship sails at nine. Port Douglas follows, closest of all to the reef and the Daintree, then late morning scenic cruising past Willis Island, a coral cay and weather station far out in the Coral Sea. Two days at sea bring you back to Sydney on 7 November.
