Coral Expeditions is Australia’s own expedition line: small ships built and crewed to reach places big ships cannot, from shallow tidal rivers to beaches with no jetty. Three ships carry between 72 and 120 guests, with an expedition team of guest lecturers, marine biologists and Indigenous guides in place of a cruise director. It suits travellers who want to see the Kimberley or the Great Barrier Reef properly, at a pace built around daily excursions rather than sea days, and who do not need a casino or a stage show to feel like they are on holiday.
The flagship season is the Kimberley between Broome and Darwin, roughly March to October, sailed by all three ships across the year with 2026 to 27 departures already on sale. Coral Expeditions also runs the Great Barrier Reef from its home port of Cairns, Tasmania’s coastline, Cape York and Arnhem Land in the Top End, and voyages further afield to Papua New Guinea, the Spice Islands and Raja Ampat in Indonesia, and New Zealand, with an occasional full circumnavigation of Australia.
Every ship carries the Xplorer, a tender that lowers hydraulically from the ship’s side and lands every guest ashore together, plus Zodiacs for closer work. Dining is single-seating and casual, with no dress code and Australian crew who do not expect tipping. Coral Adventurer and Coral Geographer are 120-guest sister ships from 2019 and 2021 with an open bridge and balcony staterooms; Coral Discoverer is the original 72-guest ship, refurbished in 2025 with new balcony suites.

Coral Expeditions’ first new-build in over a decade, delivered in 2019 with 58 staterooms and two suites, more than half with private balconies. Carries two Xplorer tenders and six Zodiacs, an open bridge, a single dining room and the Bridge Deck Lounge and Bar. Sails the Kimberley, Great Barrier Reef, Cape York, Arnhem Land, Papua New Guinea and Indonesia across the year, alternating with sister ship Coral Geographer.
Coral Adventurer’s sister ship, launched in 2021 with the same 120-guest layout, Bridge Deck Suites and balcony staterooms. Carries Indigenous art from the communities it visits, an open bridge, and the same Xplorer tender and Zodiac fleet. Runs the Kimberley in the dry season, then the Great Barrier Reef, Cape York and Papua New Guinea for the rest of the year.
The smallest and original ship in the fleet, refurbished in 2025 with new balcony suites on the Bridge Deck. At 72 guests it reaches places the two bigger ships cannot, and is the regular ship on the Great Barrier Reef and shorter Kimberley and Cape York voyages, with occasional Papua New Guinea and Indonesia expeditions.
The fleet is these three ships. The programme reaches beyond the Kimberley and the Great Barrier Reef to South Australia, Western Australia, New Zealand, the Spice Islands and Raja Ampat, with an occasional full circumnavigation of Australia.

Coral Expeditions, answered
Where does Coral Expeditions sail from in Australia?
Cairns, Broome and Darwin, depending on the voyage. The Kimberley season runs between Broome and Darwin roughly March to October; the Great Barrier Reef, Cape York and Arnhem Land sail from Cairns; and there are seasonal departures to Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and New Zealand. All three ships move between these regions across the year rather than staying in one place.
What is included in a Coral Expeditions fare?
All meals, house wines, beer and spirits with lunch and dinner, and barista-style coffee and tea all day. Daily shore excursions led by the expedition team are included, along with the Xplorer tender, Zodiacs, snorkelling gear and kayaks. Gratuities are not expected of Australian guests, though tipping the crew is optional if you choose to.
Which Coral Expeditions ship should I choose?
Coral Adventurer and Coral Geographer are near-identical 120-guest sister ships with balcony staterooms and Bridge Deck Suites, built in 2019 and 2021. Coral Discoverer is the original, smaller 72-guest ship, refurbished in 2025, and reaches narrower waterways the bigger two cannot. All three carry an Xplorer tender and run a similar programme; the ship on your dates usually decides the choice for you.
Who is Coral Expeditions good for?
Couples, solo travellers and small groups who want to see the Kimberley or the Great Barrier Reef properly, with a real expedition team rather than a cruise director. It suits early starts and a daily excursion over sea days and stage shows. It is not aimed at young children: there is no kids’ club, and most guests are travelling as couples or in pairs of friends.
What is a Coral Expeditions shore excursion like?
The Xplorer tender lowers from the ship’s side and carries every guest ashore together, usually once or twice a day; Zodiacs cover places the Xplorer cannot reach. An expedition leader, guest lecturers and sometimes a marine biologist or Indigenous guide join every landing. There is no assigned seating or dress code onboard, and no set daily routine: excursions shift with the tide and the weather.
When is the best time to see the Kimberley?
The Kimberley season runs roughly March to October, timed to the dry season and the tides that expose Montgomery Reef and power King George Falls. Coral Expeditions’ 2026 to 27 season is already on sale across all three ships. Outside that window, the ships move to the Great Barrier Reef, Cape York, Papua New Guinea and other Australian and Pacific destinations.
