Which ports does a Tasmania cruise visit?

Hobart, Australia's second-oldest city, is the main port. Salamanca Place's sandstone warehouses are close to the wharf, and MONA is a ferry ride up the Derwent.

Port Arthur Historic Site, on the Tasman Peninsula, is one of 11 places that together make up the Australian Convict Sites World Heritage property. Ships anchor in the bay and tender guests to the site's jetty.

Burnie, on the north-west coast, is the stop for Cradle Mountain, Stanley and the little penguins on the foreshore. Eden, on the far south coast of New South Wales, is a common stop on the way south.

What about South Australia?

Longer voyages continue west to Adelaide, the port for the Barossa, McLaren Vale and the Adelaide Hills. Kangaroo Island is a tender port: ships anchor off Penneshaw, and tenders land guests at a pontoon in the harbour.

Some voyages carry on to Port Lincoln and Albany, and a few sail the whole southern coast between Sydney and Fremantle.

What is a small-ship Tasmania voyage like?

Coral Expeditions sails around Tasmania on small ships that land guests at national parks and islands with no cruise port. At Maria Island you can walk to the Painted Cliffs and look for wombats, and at Freycinet a guided walk leads to Wineglass Bay.

Port Davey and Bathurst Harbour, in the remote south-west, get two days, with kayaking and hikes. Some voyages also visit Bruny Island, Flinders Island or Deal Island in Bass Strait, weather permitting.

Do I need a passport for a Tasmania cruise?

Usually not, as long as the cruise stays in Australia. Carnival, for example, accepts government-issued photo ID, such as a driver's licence, for Australian residents on domestic cruises. Guests who are not Australian residents need a passport. Rules vary by cruise line, so check yours before you sail.

What should I pack for a Tasmania cruise?

Pack layers and a waterproof jacket. Summer in Hobart averages 11.5 to 21°C, and Tasmanian weather can change quickly, even in summer. Bring comfortable walking shoes for Port Arthur's grounds and the tender transfers.

Which ports will I visit?

31 ports appear on the Tasmania cruises we list. Solid pins are where sailings begin.

  • Sydney Harbour, the Opera House and the city skyline

    Sydney

Sailing out through the Heads, past the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge, is the best start to any cruise. Board early and there is time for a last walk round Circular Quay and The Rocks first.

  • Melbourne skyline across the Yarra River

    Melbourne

Ships berth at Station Pier in Port Melbourne, a short tram ride from the city. Laneway cafes, the galleries along the Yarra and the Queen Victoria Market are the easy picks.

  • Hobart's bayside suburbs and beach on the Derwent

    Hobart

Australia’s second-oldest city, with Salamanca Place’s sandstone warehouses close to the wharf. MONA is a ferry ride up the Derwent, and kunanyi / Mount Wellington looks down on the whole town.

  • St Peter's Cathedral and parkland in Adelaide

    Adelaide

A wine day for many: the Barossa, McLaren Vale and the Adelaide Hills are all within reach. In town, the Central Market, the galleries on North Terrace and the beach at Glenelg are easy.

  • The penitentiary ruins at the Port Arthur Historic Site

    Port Arthur

The best-preserved convict site in Australia, on the Tasman Peninsula south-east of Hobart. The ship anchors offshore and tenders you in: walk the penitentiary ruins and the gardens, and take the short harbour cruise past the Isle of the Dead.

  • A kangaroo at sunset on Kangaroo Island

    Kangaroo Island

Australia’s third-largest island, off South Australia: sea lions at Seal Bay, the Remarkable Rocks and plenty of kangaroos and koalas. A tender port, with a long drive to the best of it.

Autumn brings many calm, sunny days averaging 9 to 17°C, while winter is cold and very few ships sail.

Can the sea be rough on a Tasmania cruise?

It can be. The waters south of mainland Australia, including Bass Strait, take strong westerly winds when cold fronts pass, and summer still has the odd rough day. If you are prone to seasickness, choose a cabin low down and in the middle of the ship.

Are Port Arthur and Kangaroo Island tender ports?

Yes. At Port Arthur the ship anchors in the bay and tenders bring guests to the historic site's jetty. At Kangaroo Island ships anchor off Penneshaw. A tender call can be cancelled if the sea is too rough.

How long is a Tasmania cruise?

From four nights. Short round trips from Sydney spend a day in Hobart, and voyages of a week or more add Port Arthur, Burnie, Melbourne, Adelaide or Kangaroo Island.
