Suva, the capital, is on the wetter eastern side of Viti Levu, the main island. The Fiji Museum, the municipal market and the colonial buildings along Victoria Parade are close to the wharf.
Lautoka is on the drier western side of Viti Levu, a short drive from the Garden of the Sleeping Giant and its orchids. Boats run from Lautoka to the islands of the Mamanuca group.
Dravuni is a small island in the Astrolabe Reef, south of Viti Levu, with one village of fewer than 200 people. Ships anchor offshore and tender guests to the beach.
Do I need a visa for Fiji?
No. Australians do not need a tourist visa for Fiji, but every guest needs a valid passport. Smartraveller warns that many countries want a passport valid for at least six months.
Vanuatu, on most of the same itineraries, requires a passport valid for six months from the date you enter. New Caledonia, a French territory, does not usually need a visa for Australians visiting for up to 90 days in any 180. Carry photo identification whenever you go ashore in New Caledonia, as the law there requires it.
What currency do I need on a Fiji cruise?
Fiji uses the Fiji dollar, and ATMs are common in towns and large resorts. Smartraveller advises carrying cash for village visits.
Vanuatu uses the vatu, and its small shops and market stalls only accept vatu. Some businesses in Port Vila take Australian dollars.
How should I dress for a Fijian village visit?
Cover your shoulders and legs, or wrap a sulu, a Fijian sarong, around your waist. Take off your hat and sunglasses in the village as a sign of respect for the chief, and carry your bag in your hand rather than on your shoulder.
Guided visits usually begin with a sevusevu, a small gift of kava presented to the chief to ask permission to enter the village. Follow your guide's lead on where to sit.

When is the best time to cruise to Fiji?
May to October is Fiji's dry season, the coolest and least humid time of year, with July and August the coolest months. November to April is the wet season and the cyclone season, with hot days, high humidity and short afternoon downpours. Sydney
Sailing out through the Heads, past the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge, is the best start to any cruise. Board early and there is time for a last walk round Circular Quay and The Rocks first.
Lautoka
Fiji’s sugar city, on the dry western side of Viti Levu. A short drive to the Garden of the Sleeping Giant and its orchids, or a boat out to the islands of the Mamanuca group.
Brisbane
Cruise ships use the terminal at Luggage Point, at the mouth of the Brisbane River. South Bank’s parklands and galleries, a CityCat ferry ride and Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary are the usual choices.

Mystery Island
A tiny, uninhabited island off Aneityum in southern Vanuatu, ringed by white sand and reef. Snorkel straight off the beach, buy from the market stalls set up by locals from across the water, and take the tender back when you are done.

A little piece of France in the Pacific: croissants, beaches at Anse Vata and Baie des Citrons, and the Tjibaou Cultural Centre, Renzo Piano’s tribute to Kanak culture.
