The Fremantle Passenger Terminal is on Victoria Quay, reached by Peter Hughes Drive. Fremantle Train Station and bus station are close by. For turnaround cruises, a free shuttle runs between the train station and the terminal about every 20 minutes, from an hour after the ship berths until 4pm. The walk from the station with luggage takes about 20 minutes, and the old pedestrian bridge from the station is closed.
Drop-off and pick-up are in the terminal car park, which is open when ships are in port. Paid all-day parking near C and D Sheds on Victoria Quay can be bought for up to 14 days, but it is open-air and not secure. Kings Square Car Park at 22 Henderson Street, Fremantle, is the secure, undercover option. Taxis, rideshare and airport shuttle companies all serve the terminal.
Arrive at the check-in time on your boarding pass. For afternoon or evening departures you can usually leave your bags at the terminal from about 10am, then return for boarding. Boarding is staged, and on ships with more than 2,000 guests embarkation takes four to five hours. Every departing guest goes through security screening, and checked bags are X-rayed.
Yes, for any cruise that calls at Indonesia, Singapore or anywhere else outside Australia: every guest needs a valid passport, and most cruise lines want it valid for at least six months after the cruise ends. Cruises that stay in Australia, such as Western Australian coast voyages, need photo identification, but most lines still recommend a passport. The ship berths in Fremantle, whose Victorian port streets, markets and cafes are a walk from the terminal. Kings Park in Perth is about half an hour away by train, and Rottnest Island and its quokkas are a ferry ride offshore.
Cable Beach, the pearling history in Chinatown and the camel trains at sunset. Broome is where most Kimberley voyages start or finish, so it is worth a night or two either side.
The Top End’s tropical capital. Walk the waterfront, see saltwater crocodiles up close at Crocosaurus Cove, or learn about the 1942 bombing of Darwin at the military museum. Litchfield National Park’s waterfalls are a day trip for the keen.
