Which cruise terminal will I leave from in Melbourne?

Melbourne's cruise terminal is Station Pier, run by Ports Victoria. Station Pier has three cruise berths and handles most of the cruise ships that visit Victoria.

Station Pier is at 6 Waterfront Place, Port Melbourne. Tram route 109 runs to the CBD from Stop 129 Beacon Cove, a short walk from the pier. You need a myki card for the tram, sold at the myki desk in the cruise terminal on the pier. A taxi rank is set up on the pier on cruise days.

Cruise lines can approve private cars, taxis and hire cars to drop guests on the pier. Drivers stop at the Gatehouse with boarding passes ready for a security check, drop passengers at the set-down point and leave. Public parking is limited to paid spaces in Waterfront Place next to the pier, and there is no luggage storage at Station Pier.

What time should I arrive for my cruise?

Arrive at the check-in time on your boarding pass. Cruise lines stagger boarding across the morning and early afternoon to avoid queues, and boarding usually closes an hour or two before the ship sails. Only ticketed passengers and authorised staff can enter Station Pier during embarkation. Unattended luggage is not allowed on the pier.

Do I need a passport to cruise from Melbourne?

Yes, for any cruise that calls at New Zealand, the South Pacific or anywhere else outside Australia: every guest needs a valid passport, and most cruise lines want it valid for at least six months after the cruise ends. Cruises that stay in Australia, such as Tasmania voyages, need photo identification, but most lines still recommend a passport. Check your line's rules and Smartraveller before you go.

When is the best time to cruise from Melbourne?

Most cruises from Melbourne sail between November and March, the warmer months on Bass Strait and the Tasman Sea. Few ships are based in Melbourne in winter, so cruises from Melbourne between May and September are rare.

MonthsWhat to expect
October to NovemberSpring: the first ships of the season arrive, with Tasmania and New Zealand coming into their milder months.
December to FebruarySummer and school holidays: the busiest months, with the most sailings, the warmest weather in Tasmania and New Zealand, and Christmas and New Year cruises that sell out early.
MarchEarly autumn: the last sailings of the season, often with good fares, before ships move north or overseas.
April to SeptemberAutumn and winter: very few departures from Melbourne. For a winter cruise, look at year-round sailings from Sydney or Brisbane.

Which ports will I visit?

44 ports appear on the cruises from Melbourne we list. Solid pins are where sailings begin.

  • Sydney Harbour, the Opera House and the city skyline

    Sydney

Sailing out through the Heads, past the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge, is the best start to any cruise. Board early and there is time for a last walk round Circular Quay and The Rocks first.

  • Hobart's bayside suburbs and beach on the Derwent

    Hobart

Australia’s second-oldest city, with Salamanca Place’s sandstone warehouses close to the wharf. MONA is a ferry ride up the Derwent, and kunanyi / Mount Wellington looks down on the whole town.

  • A kangaroo at sunset on Kangaroo Island

    Kangaroo Island

Australia’s third-largest island, off South Australia: sea lions at Seal Bay, the Remarkable Rocks and plenty of kangaroos and koalas. A tender port, with a long drive to the best of it.

  • Willis Island, a speck of sand in the Coral Sea

    Willis Island

A tiny sand cay far out in the Coral Sea, home to a weather station and huge seabird colonies. Seen from the deck as the ship cruises by: there is no landing.

  • St Peter's Cathedral and parkland in Adelaide

    Adelaide

A wine day for many: the Barossa, McLaren Vale and the Adelaide Hills are all within reach. In town, the Central Market, the galleries on North Terrace and the beach at Glenelg are easy.

  • Newcastle City Hall and its gardens

    Newcastle

A harbour city two hours north of Sydney, with ocean baths, the Anzac Memorial Walk above the beaches, and the Hunter Valley vineyards inland.
