The easiest way to cruise to Asia from Australia is a one-way voyage between an Australian port and Singapore. Most sail up the Queensland coast to Darwin and on to Bali and Lombok, taking about two weeks. Some take the western route instead, via Adelaide, Albany and Perth.

Many of these voyages are ships moving between their Australian summer season and Asia. Other cruises start in Asia itself, such as voyages around Japan from Tokyo and along the coast of Vietnam from Hong Kong. Where does a cruise from Australia to Singapore stop?

On the eastern route, typical ports are Airlie Beach and Cairns in Queensland, then Darwin, Benoa in Bali and Lombok before Singapore. Some voyages add Komodo Island, or Semarang on Java.

On the western route, ships call at Adelaide, Albany and Fremantle before crossing to Bali. Longer voyages carry on from Singapore to Vietnam, Hong Kong or Japan.

Do I need a visa for an Asia cruise?

It depends on the country. Australians need no visa for Singapore, but must complete the free Singapore Arrival Card before arriving. Japan lets Australians visit without a visa for up to 90 days.

Indonesia requires an e-Visa on Arrival (e-VOA) and the All Indonesia arrival card, for arrivals by sea as well as by air. Bali also charges foreign tourists a levy of IDR 150,000 per person.

What about cruises that start in Asia?

Cruises that start in Asia cover one region in more depth. Voyages around Japan from Tokyo or Yokohama call at ports such as Kobe, Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Kagoshima and Hakodate, and often stop at Busan in South Korea.

Voyages from Hong Kong or Singapore follow the coast of Vietnam, with calls at Ho Chi Minh City and Chan May, the port for Hue. Others sail round trip from Singapore to Malacca, Penang, Langkawi and Phuket, or through the Philippines and Borneo.

What are expedition cruises in Indonesia like?

There is no single best time, because Asia covers several climates. Japan is at its best for cherry blossom from late March and for autumn leaves in November, outside the peak typhoon months of July to September. In Southeast Asia, Bali's wet season runs roughly October to April, and Vietnam's storm season runs from June to November.
