About Cunard

Cunard has been crossing oceans since 1840 and still feels like it: white-gloved waiters, a proper dress code on Gala evenings, ballroom dancing in the Queens Room and afternoon tea with scones and clotted cream. It suits guests who want a formal, traditional ocean liner experience with lectures and history built in, rather than waterslides and casinos as the main event. The regular crowd tends to be 50 and over and well travelled, though Transatlantic Crossings and the Australian-linked world voyage sectors attract a younger and more multi-generational mix.

Cunard’s last Australian homeport season was Queen Elizabeth’s 2024 to 25 summer; there has been no local base since. Australia remains a major sourcing market instead, and two of the four Queens call at Sydney on their round-the-world voyages. Queen Victoria arrives on 24 February 2027 during a 109-night World Voyage, with an 18-night Los Angeles to Sydney sector and a 26-night Sydney to Singapore sector both bookable on their own. Queen Mary 2 called at Circular Quay in March 2026 on her own world voyage. Flying to Southampton, Los Angeles or New York to join a longer voyage is the other common route.

Britannia staterooms cover Inside, Oceanview and Balcony cabins, all dining in the two-storey Britannia Restaurant; Britannia Club adds a private restaurant of its own. Princess Grill and Queens Grill Suite guests get their own restaurants, and on voyages of five nights or more, drinks and gratuities are included in the fare. Every ship has a Golden Lion Pub for British pub food and the Queens Room for afternoon tea and dancing, plus its own bars and lounges. Queen Mary 2 adds the only dedicated Kennels at sea, the Illuminations planetarium and the Royal Court Theatre.

Cunard, answered

Where does Cunard sail from for Australians?

Cunard’s last Australian homeport season was Queen Elizabeth’s 2024 to 25 summer, so there is no local base now. Instead, Queen Victoria and Queen Mary 2 both call at Sydney on their round-the-world voyages: Queen Victoria on 24 February 2027, with sectors from Los Angeles and on to Singapore bookable on their own. Flying to Southampton, Los Angeles or New York to join a longer voyage is the other common route.

What is included in a Cunard fare?

Your stateroom, meals in the Britannia Restaurant and the Lido buffet, the shows, lectures and use of the pools, gym and Queens Room. Gratuities and drinks are charged separately in Britannia and Britannia Club. In Princess Grill and Queens Grill Suites, drinks and gratuities are included on voyages of five nights or longer, along with your own restaurant.

Which Cunard ship should I choose, Queen Victoria or Queen Mary 2?

Queen Victoria goes into her refit first, in October 2026, returning with a new Grand Lobby and Queens Room in time to reach Sydney on her 2027 World Voyage. Queen Mary 2 is the world’s only ocean liner, built for the Atlantic crossing, with the Illuminations planetarium and the only dedicated Kennels at sea for guests travelling with a pet.

Who does Cunard suit?

Couples, solo travellers and multi-generational groups who enjoy a dress code, ballroom dancing and a lecture programme rather than water parks. The regular clientele is 50 and over and well travelled, though Transatlantic Crossings and the Australian-linked world voyage sectors bring a younger and more mixed crowd on board.

What is a Gala Evening on Cunard?

Cunard runs two evening dress codes: Smart Attire most nights, and Gala Evening a few times a voyage, when a dinner jacket or dark suit for men and an evening dress or gown for women is expected in the Britannia, Britannia Club, Princess Grill and Queens Grill restaurants. It is part of the traditional ocean liner experience Cunard is built around.

When is the best time to sail Cunard from Australia?

February 2027, when Queen Victoria reaches Sydney on her World Voyage and the 18-night sector from Los Angeles and the 26-night sector on to Singapore are both open to book. Outside that window, Australians typically fly to Southampton for the Mediterranean or Norwegian Fjords season, or to New York for a Transatlantic Crossing.
