Hurtigruten has run Norway’s coastal service since 1893, when Captain Richard With first connected Bergen to the Arctic by sea. It suits people who want scenery over spectacle: the ships call at up to 34 ports on the classic Bergen to Kirkenes route, carrying locals, cargo and mail alongside guests, with no casino, kids’ club or formal nights. Hurtigruten’s expedition arm, HX, is a separate company; Hurtigruten itself remains the original coastal voyage, small-ship and unmistakably Norwegian.
Australians fly to Bergen or Oslo to join a voyage, then choose between the historic Original Coastal Express, a full-board round trip linking all 34 ports in 12 days, or an all-inclusive Signature voyage on the Svalbard Line or the North Cape Line. On winter sailings of 11 nights or more between 20 September and 31 March, the Northern Lights Promise offers a complimentary Coastal Express voyage if the aurora is not officially sighted from the ship, so there is little reason to wait for a guarantee.
Nine ships share the coastal timetable, from MS Vesterålen (built 1983, the smallest at 274 guests) to the Signature flagship MS Trollfjord (2002, refurbished 2023). Original ships serve Norway’s Coastal Kitchen at the main restaurant Torget, with Kysten and Brygga for something different; Signature ships add Flora, Brasserie Árran and the suite-only fine dining at Røst. Cabins run from windowless Polar Inside rooms to Expedition Suites with a private balcony and a welcome basket of sparkling wine.

Hurtigruten’s first Signature ship, with 270 cabins including 21 suites, sailing the Svalbard Line and the North Cape Line. Dining runs from the main restaurant Flora to Brasserie Árran and the suite-only fine dining at Røst, with the two-storey 1893 Bar, a panoramic sauna and a dedicated Expedition Team giving lectures on deck.
Named for Hurtigruten’s founder and upgraded to a hybrid in 2022, cutting emissions by about 25 per cent. The main restaurant Torget serves full-board breakfast, lunch and dinner, with the à la carte Kysten, the bistro Brygga and the Multe bakery for something extra, plus an Explorer Lounge & Bar, a sauna, an outdoor hot tub and a resident Expedition Team.
Named after the North Cape and refurbished with an Arctic-inspired interior, with 209 cabins including 10 suites. Torget, Kysten and Brygga cover breakfast through to à la carte dinner, the Multe bakery serves cakes and ice cream, and two outdoor hot tubs and a sauna sit up on deck alongside the ship’s own Expedition Team.
Also in the fleet: MS Midnatsol (the newest Signature ship), MS Kong Harald, MS Nordlys, MS Nordnorge and MS Polarlys, plus MS Vesterålen, built in 1983 and the smallest and oldest at 274 guests. All nine rotate through the Coastal Express, the Svalbard Line and the North Cape Line.

Bergen and Oslo are the main joining ports, with some voyages starting elsewhere in Norway. There is no direct flight from Australia, so you fly to Bergen or Oslo, usually via a European or Middle Eastern hub, and join the ship there. We can help plan the flights and any pre or post-voyage nights in Norway alongside the cruise.
On an Original voyage, full board (breakfast, lunch and dinner) at the main restaurant Torget is included, along with tea, coffee and Wi-Fi; other drinks and the à la carte Kysten and bistro Brygga cost extra. Signature voyages are all-inclusive, covering food, a drinks package and Wi-Fi, except for the suite-only fine dining at Røst. Excursions are optional on both.

Couples, solo travellers and anyone who wants scenery over spectacle: there is no casino, kids’ club or formal night, and evenings are built around lectures, local produce and watching the coast. Families are welcome and some cabins sleep three or four, but there are few dedicated children’s activities, so it suits older children more than toddlers.
On voyages of 11 nights or more sailing between 20 September and 31 March, Hurtigruten promises the Northern Lights: if the aurora is not officially sighted and announced from the ship during your voyage, you are offered a complimentary Coastal Express voyage on a future sailing. It runs until 31 March 2028 and applies automatically, with no claim needed beforehand.
For the Northern Lights, sail between 20 September and 31 March, ideally on an 11-night or longer voyage so the Promise applies. For the Midnight Sun and long daylight for hiking and photography, choose May to July. The full 12-day Bergen to Kirkenes round trip gives you all 34 ports in every season; shorter one-way legs suit a tighter budget.
