Three reef ports and an overnight make this the unhurried way to see far north Queensland. Airlie Beach comes first, a tender day for Whitehaven Beach and the Whitsunday Islands, then the ship anchors off Cairns for two days and a night: a full day on the outer reef, dinner in town, and the Kuranda Scenic Railway up into the rainforest the next morning if you want it. Port Douglas follows, closest of all to the reef and to the Daintree, then a late morning of scenic cruising past Willis Island, a coral cay and weather station 450 kilometres out in the Coral Sea. On the way south there is a day in Newcastle, for the Hunter Valley cellar doors an hour inland, before home to Sydney on 13 March.
