Mid January is high summer in New Zealand, warm and with long evenings. Two days out of Sydney comes the fiord day, Milford Sound at eight, Doubtful Sound over lunch and Dusky Sound until after five, then Dunedin for the Otago Peninsula, Larnach Castle and the albatrosses at Taiaroa Head, and Christchurch, for the Botanic Gardens or a drive out to the harbour village of Akaroa. After a day at sea, Tauranga, for Rotorua’s geothermal valleys or a swim at Mount Maunganui, and the Bay of Islands, before two days at sea home to Sydney on 25 January.
