Fly to Auckland, and sail home. The ship leaves Auckland in the evening and wakes up in the Bay of Islands, where the Treaty of Waitangi was signed in 1840, then Tauranga for Rotorua’s geothermal valleys and the Hobbiton film set. After a day at sea the run down the country begins in earnest: Napier and its Art Deco streets, Picton in the Marlborough Sounds, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin, one each day from seven in the morning. The last port day is spent in the fiords, Dusky Sound in the morning, Doubtful Sound around midday and Milford Sound in the late afternoon light, and then two days at sea let it all settle before an early arrival in Sydney on 6 February.
