1Mon 15 JanAucklandDeparts 7:00 pm
Auckland's skyline and the Sky Tower across the harbour

The City of Sails, built between two harbours and over some fifty volcanic cones. Take the ferry to Waiheke Island for its vineyards and beaches, climb Mount Eden for the view, or stay on the waterfront at the Viaduct and Wynyard Quarter.

2Tue 16 JanBay of Islands7:00 am – 6:00 pm
Islands scattered across turquoise water in the Bay of Islands

Some 144 islands, turquoise water and sandy coves, and the ship anchors in the middle of it and tenders you in. The Waitangi Treaty Grounds, where New Zealand’s founding document was signed in 1840, are close by; Russell, the old whaling port, is a short ferry ride across the bay.

4Thu 18 JanPicton7:00 am – 5:00 pm
Boats moored in Picton harbour below green hills

A small harbour town at the head of Queen Charlotte Sound, in the Marlborough Sounds. The sauvignon blanc vineyards around Blenheim are about half an hour away, or walk a stretch of the Queen Charlotte Track and watch for dolphins in the sound.

5Fri 19 JanLyttelton8:00 am – 6:00 pm
Lyttelton Harbour and the hills of Banks Peninsula near Christchurch

Christchurch has rebuilt its centre since the 2011 earthquakes: the Botanic Gardens, punting on the Avon and the Cardboard Cathedral are the easy picks. Banks Peninsula’s harbour villages and the Canterbury Plains make a good day out beyond the city.

6Sat 20 JanTimaru7:00 am – 6:00 pm
The Moeraki Boulders on the Otago coast

A port town on the Canterbury coast with a fine Edwardian main street and Caroline Bay. A good base for Lake Tekapo and Mount Cook inland, and the Moeraki Boulders further south.

7Sun 21 JanDunedin7:00 am – 6:00 pm
The Otago Harbour and peninsula hills near Dunedin

Settled by Scots and proud of it: stone Victorian streets, the grand Railway Station and Baldwin Street, one of the steepest anywhere. The Otago Peninsula has royal albatross and yellow-eyed penguins a short drive from town.

8Mon 22 JanStewart Island8:00 am – 6:00 pm
Islands off the coast of Stewart Island

New Zealand’s third island, mostly national park: kiwi in the wild, a ferry to bird-filled Ulva Island, and the little town of Oban on Halfmoon Bay. A tender port.
