Seine river cruises

Seine river cruises at a glance

A Seine river cruise is usually a seven-night round trip from Paris along the river towards the Normandy coast. Ships stop at towns such as Vernon for Monet's garden at Giverny, Les Andelys, Rouen and Le Havre, with excursions to Honfleur and the D-Day landing beaches. Some packages add hotel nights in Paris.

The Seine combines Paris, the countryside the Impressionists painted, the medieval centre of Rouen and the Normandy coast in one week. Most cruises start and end in Paris.

That round trip makes the Seine easy to pair with hotel nights in Paris. Avalon and Scenic also offer versions that add London at the end.

What is a Seine river cruise like?

A Seine cruise mixes art, history and food. Excursions run to Monet's house and garden at Giverny, Rouen's old town and the story of Joan of Arc, and the Normandy landing beaches of June 1944. The banks of the Seine in central Paris are themselves on UNESCO's World Heritage list.

Avalon also runs a dedicated WWII Remembrance and History version of its Paris to Normandy cruise.

Which ports does a Seine cruise visit?

AmaWaterways' seven-night Paris and Normandy shows the usual pattern. It sails from Paris to Les Andelys, below Richard the Lionheart's Château Gaillard, then spends two days at Le Havre for the Normandy coast, before Rouen, Vernon and a return to Paris. Rouen is where Joan of Arc was executed in 1431.

Other lines vary the stops. Uniworld moors at Caudebec-en-Caux, with a choice of Honfleur or the cliffs at Étretat, and visits La Roche-Guyon. Scenic's itinerary includes Honfleur and Conflans.

How long should I go for?

Seven nights covers Paris to Normandy and back. Scenic's Normandy and Gems of the Seine runs 11 days, and Uniworld's eight-day version includes two hotel nights in Paris.

For a longer trip, Avalon's Seine and Rhine itinerary pairs a week on the Seine with a Rhine cruise. Avalon's Paris to Normandy with London adds three nights in London, reached by high-speed train after the cruise.

Which line suits me on the Seine?

Four of our lines sail the Seine, and the itineraries differ more than the ships. AmaWaterways sails AmaLyra and AmaDante, ending with a visit to Château de Malmaison near Paris. Uniworld sails S.S. Joie de Vivre and offers a tour of Versailles.

Avalon gives a choice at Vernon between Monet's gardens and Bizy Castle. It also runs an Active and Discovery version with kayaking at Vernon. Scenic's longer Normandy and Gems of the Seine stops at Les Andelys, Rouen, Honfleur, Vernon and La Roche-Guyon, and Conflans.

What is included, and what does it cost?

Seine fares include your cabin, meals on board and guided excursions. AmaWaterways and Avalon include wine and beer with lunch and dinner, while Scenic and Uniworld include drinks through the day and more.

Fares vary by month, ship and cabin, so we do not list them here. Tell us your dates and we will compare the lines for you.

When is the best time for a Seine river cruise?

April to October suits most people, because Monet's house and garden at Giverny open from 1 April to 1 November. March and November sailings miss the garden but are quieter.

MonthsWhat to expect
MarchThe season opens. Monet's house and garden at Giverny stay closed until 1 April.
April to JuneSpring: Giverny's gardens are open, and 6 June marks the anniversary of the D-Day landings.
July to AugustSummer: the longest days of the year for sightseeing.
September to NovemberAutumn: the last sailings of the year, with Giverny open until 1 November.

Seine river cruises, answered

Do Seine river cruises visit the Normandy beaches?

Yes, most Seine cruises include a full-day excursion to the D-Day landing beaches. AmaWaterways spends two days at Le Havre for the Normandy coast, and Avalon offers a WWII Remembrance and History version of its cruise.

Can I visit Monet's garden at Giverny on a Seine cruise?

Yes, between 1 April and 1 November, when Monet's house and garden are open. Ships usually stop at Vernon, across the river from Giverny. Sailings outside those dates offer other excursions instead.

Does APT sail the Seine?

No, APT does not currently list Seine river cruises. For the Seine we compare AmaWaterways, Scenic, Uniworld and Avalon Waterways.

Are river cruises suitable for people with limited mobility?

Sometimes, but ask before you book. Ships can moor side by side, so you may need to climb stairs and cross another ship to reach the shore. Rouen and Honfleur have cobblestones and old streets, so check the walking involved.
